Paper trail

Description

Hand-drawn animation with ink, white-out and collage. Sound design by the artist. Jake Fried (1984) began his artistic career as a painter, but as he went through the process of layering and modifying images, he realized what truly interested him was the way the images metamorphosed in the course of making a painting and he changed tracks to become an animator. In recent years his films have been widely shown internationally, including at the Tate Modern, Sundance Film Festival and on Adult Swim and Netflix. Experimental animation is made on one piece of paper which he adds ink, white-out, collage and other materials to, scanning the image after every application. These images become the frames for his films which, on average, have 1500 per piece. This is a technique he developed when he first started experimenting with animation and, although a slow process as he has to let every surface dry before scanning them, creates intricate and fast-moving films from simple materials.
