MINOR FILMS, GREAT DIRECTORS
This film section assembled for AZYL SHORTS 2022 festival consists from two overlapping compilations of visually and formally unique Slovak short films and trailers for feature films from the second half of 20th century. In the line of short films by well-known directors, which they shot before their feature-length debuts (Viktor Kubal, Dušan Hanák), or after the normalization restriction of their feature-length work (Dušan Trančík, Peter Solan), trailers for films by other well-known creators (Alain Robbe-Grillet, Eduard Grečner and Martin Hollý), mostly from the 60s, enter. So, on the one hand, the selection includes successful, but forced “bounces” from feature work (Peter Solan), or testing filmmaking procedures (combination of photography and animation, Viktor Kubal). On the other hand, the special “asylum” program (70 min) deliberately suggests loose formal and ideological associations between different short forms of film narratives.
